Video: How to See Like a Artist

Standard

See on Scoop.itRule 4081

You can’t come up with an idea if you don’t first learn to see.

MizWalidah‘s insight:

The ideas in this video featuring the perspective of artist Inge Druckery can be applied to music or any art. It is fodder for the creative. I will be teaching some school kids in France songwriting and look forward to opening up their imaginations to the power of seeing, writing and singing what is beyond what we have been told something is.

“…the Paris-based startup’s broader plan is to become a music-based social network, and today it’s flipping the switch on its recommendation engine to match users with similar tastes.”

MizWalidah‘s insight:

Songdrop+facebook+with a dash of Spotify. Whyd is creating a social network for music lovers, a distinction made by them from music fans, to discover, collect and stream music based on following eachother’s recommendations. Did I say that right?

Supreme court denies appeal of woman owing RIAA $222,000

See on Scoop.itRule 4081

The seven-year copyright battle waged by Jammie Thomas-Rasset against the largest music recording companies has finally come to an end. And for Thomas-Rasset, the story ends nearly exactly where it…

MizWalidah‘s insight:

Good for Jamie Thoms-Rasset for willing to fight teh good fight. Bad for her that the mostly uninformed judicial system is still squarely on the side of the RIAA. the irony is the these same major labels who sured this native american woman of modest means for 222,000 ar now making more than that on sites like Spotify and Pandora. Though the labels were willingtosettleout of court for 3,500, the defenddant felt that sharing 24 songs onienwith friends was worth fighting her way all they tothe supreme court. Well it seems even the Supreme court has learned little from these changing times and prefer to remain on the side of strong copyright and corporate domain over the "useful arts".

For the record: i am for limited copyrightfor the sake of both the arts, the artists and the further cultivation of culture.

New Music Strategies: Podcast 8: The 360 Deal

Standard

MizWalidah‘s insight:

360 people, using 360 words to give 360 genuine bits of advice for those entering or grinding in the current music industry. This is a dynamic ebook tha tis updated until reaching 360 bits of advice and is in  response to the ever popular stance of record companies demanding 360 deals from newly signed artists.

*This book, published by leanpub.com where you can publish and write at the same time? huh? Yes, you can update your book as you go along and paid in the process. For example the 360 book offers 360 bits of advice, but now they have about a dozen. You can receive updates as they add-on advice bits and the book is done when they reach 360. Cool dude. cool. Now this is where imagination comes in.

Sharetapes: A throw back to music in a physical form (SXSW best Vince Startup Video)

Standard

An Australian startup called Sharetapes Rick Rolled its way to fame with a Vine that Mashable and NowThisNews deemed the best for any startup at South by Southwest this year. Sharetapes is essentially a download card app that is activated using NFC Near Field Communication aka that cool feature on your Samsung when phones kiss. You upload your playlist or music to it and can share it with those phones that have NFC.

MizWalidah‘s insight:

I love that Sharetapes.com suggests the value of music found in a physical form but that is where the interest ends for me. Its more of a novelty product. It also culturally excludes bands where mixtape culture never really took off, unlike hip hop, electronic and urban music. This is the intangible playlist generation of music lovers who don’t really really relate to cassette mixtapes. Shoot I am from the mix(tape) generation and am also front my band St.Lô and still find Sharetapes a flimsy culturally lightweight  (where is my pencil to rewind the scrambled tape) knock off of another time. But again, it’s a cute novelty gift.
